When the Giants Come to Town, It's Bye-Bye Baby

Post-Game 6/25: 'Pen Dragons

Giants 4, Pod-Rays 3 in 11 innings. Other than one bad pitch to Mike Cameron, who deserves some credit for fouling off four or five good pitches before hitting his 3–run HR in the 8th off Correia, the Giant bullpen was excellent again tonight. (One of the runners who scored on that HR only reached because Winn misplayed a fly ball into a double.)

Too bad Lincecum couldn’t get the W, though we all know win-loss record doesn’t matter. His shutout outing showed what happens when he throws strikes. He’s hard to hit hard. A walk or two fewer, and he might have gone eight innings instead of seven.

Just as Cameron battled before his dinger in the 8th, Dave Roberts in the bottom of the inning fought from 0–2 against Scott Linebrink to get to a full count then singled to tie the game. Great at-bat. Almost good enough to get Player of Da Game, but PLODAG honors are a tie between Lincecum and Brad Hennessey, who threw two easy innings in relief.

Timmy just wanted to pitch out of the stretch tonight. I hope that trend does not continue. He did get 8 strikeouts, and I want to see that continue. But he was missing his location here and there and I think he dodged a bullet by the Pads not capitalizing.

Either way it was a great win for the team as a whole, and the last three games have made it easier to watch them play.

As for Morris, could Atlanta be our dance partner?

In Correia's defense, he got squeezed a bit by Timmins (?) the HP Ump on a strike 3 fastball on the outside black. Perfect pitch, called a ball. But, that's no excuse to make a location mistake.

Correia, Khalil Greene = Students of the Jeff Weaver School of Hair. Glad Correia doesn't attend Weaver's pitching clinic.

Glad to see your comments on the Winn flyball. The posters on McC Chrons were all over Kline, but really, he gave up a single that Shierholtz misplayed - and then failed to hustle - into a man on 2d, then the next hitter hits a flyball that could have easily been caught if Rand had made the right read, OR run hard to get back. Kline should have had runner on first, one out. And that situation is much less stressful for Correia - even a walk to Cameron would not have been catastrophic.
Still, I wish Correia could get over the mistakes INSIDE the strike zone.

yeah, Jon Miller was all over Winn for that play. From his description, it was a fairly easy play, and Winn pulled a Marvin Benard.

Kline faced two batters and gave up a line drive and a very deep fly ball. Kline's own assessment of his performance ("terrible outing by me") probably wasn't too far off, even if his defenders should share some of the blame. With his strikeout rate continuing to dwindle, his ability to get ground balls is what's keeping him in the majors.

Still, I'm not too down on him; all in all he's pitched pretty well since the blowup in Oakland.
