When the Giants Come to Town, It's Bye-Bye Baby

Not much on the blog today. It’s difficult to type when the stink emanating from Mays Field forces you to cover your nose with one hand. Perhaps the Dodger sweep was a blessing in disguise, like rubbing a dog’s face in the mess it just made on the kitchen floor. What do they call it in classrooms these days? Ah yes: a teaching moment.

Thought of the day: if the White Sox couldn’t get a couple good prospects for Mark Buehrle, will the Giants be able to get anything back for Matt Morris? All signs point to this being a fallow trade deadline for sellers. If that’s the case, perhaps it’s better that Sabean wait until the off-season. There’s a point of diminishing return for a decent, somewhat expensive starting pitcher with a sterling clubhouse rep, and if Sabean can’t stay on the good side of that line, what’s the use of trading him now? Comments?

Agreed. Don't trade just to trade, we need to get good value out of Morris if we are going to break up a good rotation by trading him. Tough luck for the other team if they don't want to give more. We need to wait for a desperate team who decides to give us a Zambrano-Kazmir type of deal. Else wait until off-season, I'm sure there are teams who view his salary as cheap now.

Wouldn't it be great though if the Giants trade Morris for another light-hitting, low OBP machine like Pedro Feliz? That seems to be Sabean's sweet spot for position players.

Seriously though, would a deal like Morris and Vizquel for Lugo, part of his salary, and a B prospect from the Red Sox be worth the trouble?

Why Lugo? Ever since he stopped grabbing at his crotch like it was on fire he's gone into a horrible slump. Why assume him and that contract?

Morris, if he keeps pitching like this, is quite a commodity. 10M for a good starting pitcher is practically a bargain nowadays, and you have the ability to control him for 2 more years. The whole point of the trade deadline is that it imposes desperation on contending teams, which is *supposed* to lead to motivation to get a deal done.

If that doesn't happen, there's no reason to get rid of him just to get rid of him. I agree with Lefty 100%.

Completely agree. If we can't pull of a deal like Morris to Seattle for Balentien or Jones then we should just wait until the off season.

If this happens, Bill Bavasi will be sliced, diced and fed to an orca by local mobs.

If the Giants blog community couldn't get Sabean fired I very much doubt it the Mariners blog community would have any more sucess. The Mariners want to win now and think they can with the right adds. Morris (as Grant stated on McCovey Chronicles) is the best available starting pitcher and this is exactly what Seattle needs most. We need to leverage this need into Balentien and I think we can and I will be very disappointed if we settle for anything less.

There is no way the Giants aget anything near players like Balentien or Jones for Matt Morris. He has stunk up the joint for a month now and really is nothing more than an overpaid innings eater right now. That is not something that is going to return a top notch prospect that is close to the majors. If they're lucky perhaps they get someone who is a few years away & some salary relief, but don;t expect much more than that. Sabean already missed his window of opportunity to trade Morris a month ago, when he was pitching much better than his peripherals would indicate.

Two comments:

1) rainmain -- If the Giants can get Jones or Balentien for Morris without sweetening the pot, I will be thrilled, and with the trade news I'll post your picture with the caption "Giantsrainman = genius!" Teams, even teams with GM's as thick as Bavasi, don't trade blue-chip prospects on the verge of making the bigs for overpaid, league-average pitchers. Maybe a few years ago, but not today.

That said, it's possible a package of players including Morris could return Jones or Balentien, but straight up? Would that it were true.

2) Boof -- you say Sabean "missed his window of opportunity" to trade Morris, but isn't it possible no one wanted to trade a month ago? Or if they did want to trade, they weren't desperate enough to offer decent value in return?

It's more than possible that no one wanted Morris even then. In fact, it was probable. Most, not all, of the league's GMs are not dumb and recognize that Morris is not as good as his stats might have suggested. However, a month ago, we might have been able to convince one of the dumber ones that he was worth a decent prospect. Unfortunately, one of the dumber GMs is the one running our team.

I picked Lugo mainly because he's precisely the type of player Sabean would deal for - overrated defense, a little old, doesn't really hit, and overpaid.

My real point is:
1.) Other than Morris, the Giants don't really have any veterans of value to trade, and Morris is still a #3 starter at best, and that isn't going to get you a really good young player from a contender.
2.) Sabean should be fired if he trades Cain or Lincecum for anything short of 2-3 everyday position players.
3.) I can't trust Sabean when pretty much every signing decision in the last few years has been a bad deal, outside of Bonds. I mean, the list of players signed where the Giants were bidding against themselves for mediocre talent is pretty long: Benard, Snow, Alfonzo, Matheny, Feliz, Zito (and even the non-mediocre talent - Bonds, an extra year or two for Vizquel, Morris, Molina)
which leads to: what has Sabean done recently that would make any of us think that he'd be able to rebuild the team or fleece other GMs?
