When the Giants Come to Town, It's Bye-Bye Baby

No Correian War

Kevin Correia avoided arbitration and signed for $1.075 million, with some incentives sprinkled in.

Also, the Chron is reporting this Sabean quote about the Giants' young(er) outfielders, perhaps the nicest thing I've heard him say in a couple of years: "I'd hate like hell to be in a position to send any one of them back to the minor leagues, because I don't think any one of them has anything to prove down there and they don't deserve to be down there."

That would be a great quote except that all of them sans Nate are out of options. He CANT send them down even if he wanted to. His hand was forced and now he is trying to make it look like its a youth movement. Sabes hasn't given anybody under 30 playing time unless he is basically forced to.

Sabean has given all of the homegrown pitching staff opportunities to start plus other key relief roles while under 30, plus there have been a number of position prospects to get starting roles include Mueller, heck, Kent (he was not a full-time starter until with the Giants), Snow, Aurilia, Benard, Niekro, Ellison.

It is a silly, meaningless thing to say without context or follow-up. They will carry either 6 IFs or 6 OFs, they can't do both. So, as the afrticles point out, Rowand and Winn are definitely everyday players. You're not going to carry 6 players to cover 3 spots, not when the consequence is to carry 5 IFs, 3 of whom are Durham, Aruilia, and Vizquel

It would also be more meaningful if he didn't also say "...that Rowand and Winn are going to be out there a lot, and we hope that Dave comes back to form."

That tells me all I need to know about whether Sabean is really going to play the youngsters..........He's not.

He should have followed that line with "and that's why we're having to let Roberts go, which we hate to do because he's a great guy, but our mission is to see if the younger players will be a fit for 2009 and beyond."
