I'm on a rare business trip with little blog time, but it's worth passing along this tidbit. At SFO last night, nursing a beer and waiting for my boarding call, I caught the last two innings of the Giants game. In the bottom of the ninth, before Wilson gave up the two-run single to make the game scary, he struck out Edgar Renteria on a fastball that registered 102 MPH. On the TV, the closed caption diligently tried to follow Krukow and Kuiper's patter, with this classic exchange (not quite verbatim, but close):
Kuip: I don't know, 102 is probably a little high, but it's still worth saying: Sit down!
Kruk: Yeah, grab some [several seconds pause]..... pie and meat!
When Vizquel made the dazzling play to end the game, I jumped off my barstool with a Marv Albert-like "Yes!", prompting several tourists to look on in shock as if to say, "How can anyone who roots for the Giants care that much?"
To which I would respond, of course, Grab some pie and meat.
One quick observation from the small part of the game I saw: Brian Wilson needs to throw inside more. When he went away consistently, the Tigers hit the ball hard (Cabrera, Rodriguez and Granderson all got opposite-field hits). When he came in, the batters were all tied up. I was sweating the inning and worried about missing my plane, so if anyone else was watching closely, feel free to add to this.
You sure he said "pie and meat"?
Because I've often heard him say "Grab some pine, meat!"
So perhaps you just heard him wrong.
But your story is much better.
