When the Giants Come to Town, It's Bye-Bye Baby

Posey not Smoak!

The Giants took Florida State catcher Gerald “Buster” Posey with the fifth pick in the draft. The big surprise is they passed on slugging first baseman Justin Smoak. The bigger surprise is that 10 teams passed on Smoak — he went 11th to Texas.

Posey reportedly wants a truckload of signing-bonus money. If the Giants come to terms with him quickly, it’s not unreasonable (if he’s actually good) to imagine him ready for the big leagues in 2010, the heir apparent to Bengie Molina.

Unfortunately, I’m on deadline and barely have time to get up and piss. Were you ready to start Smoaking? Are you happy to Buster move? I leave the discussion to you.

I'm really bummed out. When the term "safe pick" is tagged to a guy it's like seeing bright yellow spots on a frog.

STAY AWAY. POISON. BAD FOR TEAM.

Posey and Gillaspie seem like exactly the kind of picks made by an organization whose highest aspiration is to spend the next 5 years battling to be a few games over .500.

Mediocrity is sooooo boring.

The guy hit .468 in 63 games at FSU this season and he's mediocre?

Tough crowd.

With metal bats in a home yard that makes the wiffle ball field on my lawn look like the Polo Grounds.

Assuming that he does not get get the outrageous $12 million reported as a bonus, then I am happy with the pick. He seems to me like he could be our Joe Mauer in 2010 or so. Hopefully he can stay at catcher, but his versatility is also valuable. I want to throw out there that I would love to see the Giants draft Gabe Jacobo! I grew up with him and played with him since little league and not only is he a great ball player, but a great guy. He had a hell of a season at Sac State and could go somewhere in the top 10 rounds. His whole family is Giants fans and it would be awesome to see him in orange and black one day.

Smoak was the guy all the White Sox fans wanted too. I mean...Gammons compared him to Chipper Jones. Instead they took a shortstop who'll maybe be as good as Kahlil Green.

I would have preferred Smoak. But I don't see the pick trashed anywhere by the 'talking heads.' I am also impressed that Tampa was trying to decide between Posey and Beckham for the #1 (ie, they see him as either a #1 or #2). And maybe they didn't take him based only on the contract demand. Next, Fla was reported to be ready to take him at #6. Against this, smoak falls and falls, not taken until #11. Lastly, I am impressed that all of our top picks were guys rated higher than we took them. So, there is enough information to clearly indicate that my hoped for selection probably was the wrong call.
