* Reports last month said the Giants were freezing ‘09 prices, but that isn’t the case across the board. The team just sent me a note that the bleachers for season ticket holders will be cheaper than last year.
The price is dropping from $17 to $15 a ticket. That’s $168 less per seat. I don’t know if other sections will be cheaper — I’m checking — but it looks like the Giants are willing to take a hit on some ticket revenues to make sure season ticket holders don’t defect.
In light of all the rumors of possible free-agent spending, we’ll keep a close eye on this.
* Even if the Giants sign Sabathia and keep their other starters, they’ll need a 5th starter. The more I think about it, the more I like the idea of taking a low-cost run at a veteran looking to rebound or rebuild a career. Mark Mulder, Mike Hampton, Carl Pavano, even Pedro Martinez might be available at the right price, i.e., one year with most money tied up in performance incentives.
Right now, assuming a rotation of Lincecum, Cain, Zito and Sanchez, the candidates for the final spot are Noah Lowry, Joe Martinez, Kevin Pucetas, Steve Hammond, Pat Misch…need I go on? I’d love to pencil in Lowry, but I would need a pencil full of sacred healing crystals. We have no idea if Noah will ever pitch again. What if the G’s could give Pedro a million guaranteed plus a boatload of incentives? Given his semi-royal status, that might be a fantasy, but you see what I mean. Mike Hampton wasn’t very good last year (except against the Giants), but at bargain-basement rates, he wouldn’t have to be very good next year, either.
What about Ben Sheets or Brad Penny? Sheets especially would be an interesting signing for the right price as he is one of the more dominant pitchers when healthy. What about Randy Johnson, how much is he going to command and even if it was 10 million for 2 years wouldnt that be worth it??
Re. Sheets: Given his relative youth and ace-like abilities when healthy, he'll get more than 1 year.
He's not worth the risk for what the Giants are seeking. Remember, this is about getting a serviceable 5th starter. That's what you pay for -- anything else is lightning in a bottle.
Re. Randy: One year, less than $5 M...very enticing. More than that? Not so much.
Again, the trick with any of these high injury risk guys is low base pay, high incentives. There are enough of these guys out there right now to give the Giants a little leverage.
Has anybody heard the status of Russ Ortiz' rehab?
I haven't heard anything. Did he have TJ surgery?
Did we put those guys on the 40-man roster to protect them from the rule 5 draft (aka are they all eligible for it)? With a normal GM I would not ask this question as I would know that was the reason...but I can't say I have that much faith in Sabean.
I don't think carrying incentive-based money to the 2010 payroll is worth it for a "name" 5th starter. I'm fine with letting one of the youngsters try to emerge or hoping that Lowry can make a comeback. If the Giants get Sabathia, I think you HAVE to find a bat for Sanchez.
>I don't think carrying incentive-based money to the 2010 payroll is worth it for a "name" 5th starter
Why would they carry such money to 2010? The player either earns the cash in '09 via performance, or he doesn't. Are you confusing it with deferred money?
Only if we dont get Sabathia, I would consider Pedro Martinez, but let's not waste a dime on Hampton, Mulder or Pavano...I agree with Cyrus, if we get CC, we should move Sanchez for a power hitting corner-iinfielder, preferably with the name of Chris Davis...
