Well, that was fast. Bob Howry is the latest Giant, at the low, low price of $2.75 million for one year, far less than I expected him to command. If he throws like he did in 2006–2007, not 2008, this is a great move. Schulman talked to Sabean’s right-hand man Ron Schueler who said Howry was overworked last year.
I was off on the years, but earlier today I guessed right about the incentives. According to the AP, Howry’s contract is chock-a-block with extras:
Howry can earn an additional $500,000 based on games, getting $100,000 each for 55, 60, 65, 70 and 75 appearances. He can earn $1 million based on games finished: $100,000 for 45, $200,000 for 50, $300,000 for 55 and $400,000 for 60.
Funny how Schueler said Howry’s troubles last year came from overwork, but he’s now got a million or so reasons to pitch as much as possible. Question about those “games finished” milestones: Does it count when the Giants lose and Howry is the last Giant pitcher on the mound?
He’s now on the 40–man roster to the right, which gives the Giants two free spots. If they add Renteria, they’re nearly full. A trade is gonna come.
There is, according to a fanpost on mcCovChron, a trade being discussed, Sanchez for Jorge Cantu, former MI, erstwhile 1b.
I think the most encouraging thing, regarding Howry, is Schueler's comments in Shulman's article, which indicates they are pretty satisfied last year's drop off was manager induced and not age induced - meaning he is likely much better than last year's numbers, even if not all the way as good as '05'-'07. This seems like a very astute signing.
I reference the Cantu rumor, which started with the Yahoo sports beat writer, in the previous post.
I like the signing a lot. Worse case scenario (aside from injury), 2008 was the start of a trend and he gets used much less than planned, and he's gone after the year. With a projected bullpen of:
Yabu
Hinshaw
Taschner
Howry
Affeldt
Romo
Wilson
it looks like Valdez will be the wildcard who could unseat Hinshaw or Taschner and really solidify the bullpen.
Juan Cruz has a better arm, but one-year deal is acceptable...I would be surpised by that Cantu trade. I think there are better options for trading Sanchez...
Juan Cruz would have also taken 2 more years and a 2nd round pick.
There's a good chance I'll see Timmy next week. Anything you want me to ask him?
Ask him:
- What do you think of the bullpen signings?
- How does your arm feel? Have you thrown at all in the off-season so far?
- Are you learning any new pitches or refining old ones?
- Any lingering effects from the line drive that hit you in the leg in Houston (was it Houston)?
- What do you think life would be like if you were traded to Toronto last winter?
Ask him what his thoughts are about a long-term contract, about staying here long-term. Ask if he'd be willing to go into his free agency years like Pedroia. Ask him what he think of Pedroia's contract.
I wouldn't ask the Toronto question, why bring back bad feelings? We want him to want to stay here, not think of past hurts.
Ask him how he likes Taschner: spit roasted, fried, or broiled?
I just want to add that this Sanchez-Cantu rumor better be untrue. What a ridiculous idea. Could they sell any lower on Sanchez? He's guaranteed to pitch better in 09 than 08, in which case his value would go way up. Why just throw him away for a hacker who can't play defense?
A Cantu-Renteria-Burriss-Sandoval infield, with the exception of Burriss, would be a pretty bad infield. Not the way to entice FA pitchers to sign here, IMO.
I think it's like the Rios for Lincecum "deal": the other team leaked it in order to get other teams interested in dealing for their player. Notice how Rios is again on the block?
and 1) are you going to sign an extension with us, 2) (interesting to me since my dad started Little League in Bellevue for me, his bratty kid)Did you play Little League in Bellevue, and 3) Do they still play on the HS football field?
Howry will be a nice compliment. They’re not going to miss use him the way they did Walker and Taschner. Maybe I'm being naive. No can do Cantu for Sanchez!
About the overworked comment, if I recall right, Schueler said that it was not overuse from games but rather overuse from throwing in the bullpen but then not being used in the game. That's the iceberg below the tip.
Funny, but Howry instead mentioned that his mechanics were off and inconsistent in 2008 but didn't mention how he would fix that in 2009, just that he is confident he'll return to previous form.
And yes, I believe games finished include losing games. Because otherwise, it would either only be a save or a blown save that we won anyhow.
