4/12: Swept in San Diego

Vote 0 Votes

The best thing about today was Andy Baggarly's notes from Thursday's Little Giants game in San Jose. With all the other prospect dazzle down there (Bumgarner, Posey, Alderson, etc.), Baggs foams over Brandon Crawford: "Steal of the '08 draft"? That would be nice.

Meanwhile, back in the bigs, the Giants lose today in a game that looked suspiciously like the first two of the series. Lincecum looked better but not good; Fred Lewis made a bad situation worse with two bad reads on balls that probably should have been caught. Velez also missed a smash to deep left-center and bobbled a ball that led to a run.

Like last night, I'm not bent out of shape that the Giants couldn't do much with the Padres' starter. Chris Young and his freako 86-MPH high fastballs can throw a whammy on any team on any given day. I'm more disturbed by the team's futility all weekend against the San Diego bullpen (6+ innings, 1 unearned run), which by all reports Kevin Towers assembled this winter through Craig's List and early morning trips to Home Depot.

Instead of fretting over what might happen in L.A., I'll count on Randy Johnson to get his Big Angry on and put an end to this foolishness. And since my prediction of Rowand's rest day went so well, I'll betcha Juan Uribe gets another start tomorrow, this time subbing for Emmanuel Burriss at second.

Let's name our top players for Week #1:

Lewis and Rowand have better batting numbers, but I'm going with Randy Winn for making it all happen in the leadoff spot. I love his game right now. (I think he should have four stolen bases, too -- didn't he steal home against S.D. Friday night?)

On the mound, it's Matt Cain for posting the only good turn from the rotation thus far, and against a wallbangin' team in the Brewers, no less.
