Brian Wilson will tweet no more. He has signed off. He is an ex-tweeter. He blamed the media, of course, for not understanding his sense of humor. (Back story here.) So did his tweety buddy Barry Zito, who will carry the torch for him. Zito tweet-explained last night that “Wilson deleted his account as that was the way for him to prove all the media wrong in their assumptions.”
I like the idea of pro athletes expressing themselves, especially when it gives us wacky stuff to write about or, less frequently, serious insights into the psychology or routines required to do their jobs.
The insight from all this, beyond the fact that Brian Wilson has a mischievous sense of humor, is that Wilson is a) pouty b) naive c) a bit thick, or perhaps all three.
You can’t have your cake and save it, too, Brian. As a public figure, you can’t put anything and everything out into the public sphere in an effort to be cool and expect anyone and everyone to see it through the same lens. To blame the media for not understanding your sense of humor is childish and pouty. To blame the media is downright dumb when it was bloggers — the very people you’re trying to reach via Twitter — who got the story rolling about you staying out late the night before your blown save.
