Welcome to the big squad, Brandon Medders. (And whoa -- new Baseball Reference interface! I like it.) Much to everyone's surprise, the Giants took former Arizona reliever Medders over Luis Perdomo, the Rule 5 pick who had a great chance of pulling off the rare feat of sticking with the team that picked him.
Perhaps Perdomo's final apperances, including a 10th inning meltdown Friday in which he allowed two hits, a walk and two wild pitches, tipped the scales against him. If so, that's an awfully small sample size. As Baggs noted today, however, the Giants still have 10 days to work out a trade with St. Louis to keep him. The question is, is he worth it? The Giants have a little leverage with St. Louis, because if they place him on waivers, other teams could snag Perdomo and stash him on the roster all year. St. Louis might be willing to take a scrubby type of prospect to get anything back for Perdomo.
On the roster to the right you'll find the new 40-man roster, with the active 25-man roster in boldface.
News about Perdomo might be the most exciting thing to come out of Mays Field until Wednesday, as a big rainstorm is headed toward Tuesday's opener. That would cause all kinds of scheduling headaches, because the Brewers don't come back to S.F. all year. And unlike every other team, the Giants decided to open Tuesday instead of Monday so they could squeeze in an extra exhibition (today's). Schulman of the Chron writes that the extra game was strictly a financial decision.
For those who see omens everywhere, an Opening Day rainout has to be a bad sign. If nothing else, it's a horrible way to treat those of us who don't give a flying fig about football, hockey or basketball. Please complete this sentence: The only thing worse than a rained-out Opening Day is a ______________.
