5/5: Wrigley Off The Hook

Vote 0 Votes

Giants 6, Cubs 2: A split in Wrigleyville? I'll take it. A bunch of guys wearing black and orange circled the bases today, scoring what apparently are called "runs," and the pitchers got their usual Freak on. When Merkin Valdez blew three high-90s fastballs past Derrek Lee with two men on base in the 8th, let's hope a very large light bulb went on in Bruce Bochy's very large head. Bobby Howry, 90-MPH sinkers, or Valdez, 98-MPH cheezalicious?

Ding. You are now free to move about the bullpen. Baggs has more details on a possible set-up shuffle here.

Any other takeaways from today's game? Let's go to the bullet points:

* It's nice to see the Giants score six without their hottest hitter Pablo Sandoval. I'm all giddy to see what the kid can do at Coors Field. (2 for 12 with a HR and 2 walks last year.)

* Manny Burriss continues to hit line drives and get on base. He's 8-for-17 with three BBs, a HBP and 3-for-4 in steals his last six games. Keep proving me wrong, kid.

* Fred Lewis continues to scuffle, yet he's still getting on base at a 40% clip. I refuse to push the panic button about his strikeouts. One RBI a month is not a good pace, though take note that he's had all of 15 plate appearances with runners in scoring position, and he's gotten on base seven times. If he's not a run producer, leave him be in the leadoff spot and go out and find someone else for the 5-hole.

* I'll be steamed if Nate Schierholtz doesn't play both games in Colorado. Les Rochers are starting two righties, Jimenez and Marquis, and it's a perfect chance to rest Winn one day (terrible career numbers against Jimenez) and Rowand the next (horrible history against Marquis).
