D'Backs 2, Giants 1: The dormant offense was different than the 4-0 shutout in Florida, in that Arizona pitcher Max Scherzer looked like he could have blanked the Yankees today. Guh-narsty stuff, especially that fastball/changeup combo. Then again, with Uribe hitting third, Lewis fifth and Frandsen sixth, Max
Factor could have blanked the Giants today.
Feel free to substitute your own hilarious Max alternative.
Jonathan Sanchez: 5 2/3 innings, only 3 hits, but 7 walks and 1 batter plunked. Amazing that none of those freebies came around to score, prompting Sanchez to say
this to Andrew Baggarly post-game:
"I think I'm getting close to the roll I was on last year. I've just
got to throw more innings and cut the walks. If I cut the walks, I can
throw six or seven innings every time." I can imagine Sabean cutting and pasting that quote and emailing it to his GM peers.
He's getting close, gentlemen. Don't wait too long and miss out.In the same post linked above, Baggs makes a bold prediction:
The biggest reason I think Sanchez will be traded in the coming weeks:
Madison Bumgarner is 4-0 with a 1.86 ERA in five games at Double-A
Connecticut. Nobody's told me Bumgarner will be in the big leagues this
season, but I've got to believe it can't be long.
Well, now. Nobody's told him, but a beat reporter usually doesn't pluck such flights of fancy out of the ether. I'll bet he's picking up hints, gestures, vibes, a little aura to get Baggs's spidey sense tingling. Note how he phrases the disclaimer: "Nobody's told me Bumgarner will be in the big leagues this season." That's a lot of wiggle room if he's ever forced to parse his words. For example, somebody deeply off the record could have told him, "Look at Bumgarner's numbers so far, and draw your own conclusions." Or, "If Sanchez leaves, we have other lefties in the system who could replace him."
See what I mean? Still, I'd be shocked. Two years ago, Bumgarner was finishing high school. He doesn't turn 20 until August 1. If he's called up before his birthday, he'd be the youngest pitcher in the majors since...any idea? I found
this list of youngest active players, but it ends at 1998. There are a few teenage pitchers -- Jose Rijo and Bret Saberhagen, both 19, debuted within a day of each other! -- and the 19-year-old Dwight Gooden doesn't even make the cut, thanks I suppose to a slightly younger Gilberto Reyes. Any teenage pitchers since 1998? On your marks, get set, research!
MadBum by August 1:
Could it really happen? Should it really happen? Is Baggs loopy from 10 days on the road and 46 hours of rain delays? Discuss.
I can see only two reasons for bringing up MadBum this year:
1) Sanchez is traded and he comes up as our 5th starter
2) We are still in contention in September and he comes up as an extra bullpen arm a la David Price last year
While I would love to see scenario 2 happen, I'm not holding my breath. If we do trade Sanchez then, in my opinion, it has to be for a legit power hitter who is under control for 2-3 years minimum. I am not overly keen on trading for a rent-a-bat to help with a run at the wild card.
Perhaps keeping Sanchez and moving him to the pen next year if MadBum is up is another alternative to think about
Felix Hernandez came up at 19 yrs in 2005.

Ah yes. King Felix. It hasn't worked out badly for him, though one thing in common the teen debuts have is that they're all more or less toast by 30 (Saberhagen, Gooden, Valenzuela, Rijo) and spend their 30s just trying to hang on.
and Felix acts like he's 13 years old.
Sadly Max has been blanking the Giants for several years now.

I would have gone with Max Headroom... that's probably not a good thing, though.
I can't remember where but I had heard a rumor of Sanchez and someone for Nick Markakis. The O's are stocked with outfielders and have no pitching. But again I had once heard a rumor about Cal Ripken coming home to find his wife with another man and was so upset he didn't make it to the ballpark but it just so happened that they had a "power outage" at the stadium that night and the game was postponed.
You forgot the best part of that story where Cal came home to find his wife with another man. The other man was supposedly Kevin Costner and Cal supposedly injured himself kicking the crap out of crash. I think Damon Bruce threw out the idea of trading for markakis but cant remember if he mentioned sanchez or not. Baltimore needs pitching and has a few good OF as well as guys like Aubrey Huff who could be trade bait but I wouldn't over pay for anyone but maybe Markakis... I happen to like Nolan Reimold though the little he has been up this year and wouldnt mind getting him for cheap.
Yeah, I think the rumor had Cal in jail for beating the crap out of Costner and that's why he wasn't at the game.
it was not a rumor and Cal did not go to Jail, but threw out his back...
An expanded-roster, heater-slingin role in August might be a great fit MadBum, potentially allowing the Giants to curb his total innings for the season and gain some ML-experience at the same time. I dream that RJ and Affeldt seed him him with secondary-pitch savvy. I really think Sosa might have earned that 5th spot by that time himself...
If Bumgarner makes the majors this season, kudos should go out to both Sabean and Tidrow, as they both said that Bumgarner was on the fast track and could make the majors within two years. Who knew they could be right in terms of it being just two years of them being drafted? I figured the wiggle room there would be two full years of pro baseball, making the deadline next season.
And Sabean thinks Wheeler is like Bumgarner and Alderson (and Cain).
I would also note that Cain came up to the majors at age 20, though just before he turned 21.
How funny, Bumgarner turns 20 on the first day after the trade deadline, August 1st. What a coincidence. Or is it? :^)
No way the O's would trade us Markakis for Sanchez alone, we would probably have to include Alderson in such a deal, plus probably a prospect or two in addition. I think Sanchez is worth Markakis, 1-for-1, but he hasn't proved that yet, so that would be a huge leap for Baltimore to take to make this trade.
Yeah, I agree. It was Sanchez and someone else that was mentioned but I don't remember who.
Yes, it was a rumor, it didn't actually happen but was almost as good of a fake story as the 50 midgets that were mauled by a lion in a Cambodian ring fight.

this was meant as a reply to anonymous in reply to Ca kicking Crash's ass
they also have this kid Nolan Reimold who was a second rounder in 2005 and is hitting .271 .326 .541 with seven homers in 25 games since being called up in mid-may. He is probably too much of a risk for Sanchez straight up, but it does give them flexibility to move Jones or Markakis. They won't go for Sanchez, but I would think hard about Cain for Jones.
