Angels 9, Giants 7: The Giants' streak of not getting blown out continues, thanks to late inning fireworks from Pablo Sandoval (two HRs, 4 RBI) and Andres Torres (2-run homer). Barry Zito pitched two mediocre games before this one, and let's hope tonight (3 2/3 IP, 7 R) doesn't foretell a slide into the Old Giant Zitoness. The Angels didn't dink and doink Barry -- two balls left the yard against him, and he hung a couple crucial 0-2 pitches that turned into line drive base hits. I thought the microcosm of the game came when he got two strikes on opposing pitcher John Lackey (0 for 26 lifetime at the plate), threw several pitches that Lackey fouled off or took off the plate, then threw a fat fastball that Lackey lined into center for an RBI single. If you can't put away a guy who's 0 for 26 career, it's not your night.
My man Broc, chilling with me in the 1-3-8 tonight, said after Manny Burriss's third overmatched AB that Burriss was going to find someone waiting for him in the dugout to say, "Um, Manny, Skip wants to see you in his office. Now."
Translation: Burriss is this close to punching his Greyhound ticket back to Fresno. Unfortunately Kevin Frandsen can't come back for 10 days because he just went down. I'll betcha Frandsen would be back up tomorrow otherwise.
That's what pisses me off, it should have been Burriss sent down this weekend, not Frandsen. Burriss has had enough time to show what he got and he's not doing it, at least not on a regular basis.
Now with Frandsen out until after the A's series, the only alternative would be to start Uribe there, once his hammy heals, though I suppose they could start Aurilia there as well. Either way, those ABs should have been going to a prospect like Frandsen, and not vets.
Here's a wild thought: Jesus Guzman used to play 2B, why not bring him up until Frandsen can come up? Sure, he'll be a butcher there and him and Renteria up the middle - shudder! - but that would give him a good number of games to start and play, before we bring up Frandsen to take over 2B, and allow the major league staff to check him out up close for further evaluation and development.
On a slightly different note, can Torres play/has he ever played 2B? Only wondering because he currently merrits playing everyday and Manny doesn't. If this was possible it would also give Freddy/Winn more chance to play out of their respective slumps.
Any predicitions for Sanchez? I'm guessing he's hooked after 4 2/3, 108 pitches, 5BB, 2H, 6K, 2ER
Derrek Lee (34) is almost old enough to be a Sabean pickup. Gee, maybe the Cubs will take Baumgartner and Valdez for him!
I don't understand all the Frandsen love - I haven't seen anything in him that indicates he has the potential to be anything more than a journeyman. At least Burriss has speed, and has made some exceptional defensive plays.
If they were to bring anyone up, I would much rather see Bowker back if/when Panda can return to 3B. They need hitters who can drive the ball.
>>At least Burriss has speed, and has made some exceptional defensive plays.
Speed means nothing if you can't get on base. Burriss has made exceptional plays, but he has also botched easy ones. For what it's worth, Fangraphs gives him a negative defensive rating this year, ie, he's cost more runs than he's saved.
The argument for Frandsen v. Burriss is not that Frandsen is the second coming of Dustin Pedroia, but that he's likely to give the Giants more than .232 / .292 / .267, which are Burriss' godawful numbers so far, without giving away much on D. Burriss has plenty of time -- perhaps working on his skills in AAA isn't a bad thing.
Also, the impact of Burriss speed is minimal since his OBP has not allowed him to move up in the order from the 8-hole and the Giants bunt him over rather than allowing him to steal on the rare occasion that he does happen to get on base.
No to Lee, he looks done, but we better make a move fast because the idea of Aurilia playing third while Uribe misses games and Uribe being our everyday third bagger, scares the bejesus out of me. I have been pushing a trade for Aubrey Huff for lower level prospects, maybe Pucetas straight up. I think Huff's ability to play third and the OF could be huge...
Did Zito's struggles on the mound have anything to do with having to pitch to Molina behind the plate? Whether it is Bengie's fault or not, it can't go unnoticed that Zito sucks when Bengie catches him and then all of a sudden starts pitching like Kenny Rogers with a palm full of pine tar when he has anyone else behind the dish. Enough already, give him his personnal catcher and see if he can turn it around again.
I would go so far as to say that Bengie should be shipped out if anyone is willing to offer anything for him. We need to deal for a middle of the order bat anyway so losing Bengie won't sting as bad offensively if we can get a guy like Derosa or Uggla to come in and bat 4th. With guys like Sandoval, Whiteside, and Posey ready to take over in the near future it just makes sense to move on and hopefully get some value for good old Bengie.
I have always been surprised that someone like the Red Sox have not come asking for Bengie, but there is no evidence anybody wants him. Would be hard to have Sandoval be his catcher when he cant throw the ball with any effectiveness on a steal..
Wouldn't be surprised at all if Bengie goes - a good catcher who can hit around .300 is hard to come by. And luckily the Giants have more than one of those.
Not impressed by Frandsen this year, but I think he got screwed this year by not being the starting 2B out of camp - and he feels like it, and is playing like it. Burriss will make more fielding highlight reels, but Frandsen has way more upside, IMHO. I don't believe in the back and forth from AAA thing - let Velez be the resident speedster, and let Frandsen get a good shot.
The playoffs would sure be nice, but focusing on anything but 2010 and beyond is a big mistake - I too fear about what Sabean might do. Relish the plethora of starters - TNSTAAPP. Holliday will sign over the winter anyway, I'd guess - but I bet Beane is rubbing his hands with glee about how he can pry half the Giants' farm system away from Sabean right now.
>>I think he got screwed this year by not being the starting 2B out of camp - and he feels like it, and is playing like it.
How do you figure? He's having an excellent year in Fresno, and in the two brief visits to SF, he's had some hard luck at the plate but played nice defense.
Dont worry about Sabean making any stupid trades.I think the new ownership has a handle on things and a leash on Brian.Lets hope that the 18 million they pissed away on Edgar R. Is the first and last bad move on bill N. watch.the Giants need to wait this out until the sellers crack a little. It is going to be a fire sale you will see.
Ok Boys here is some scoop !!!!! Roster move coming today !!! First time big leauge player coming today!!! and he is a position player. his name will be announced by bochy around 4pm
If Downs, someone will have to leave the 40-man as well as the 25-man. Could be Downs for Aurilia, with Burriss staying up to provide pinch-running and late-inning D.

Is anyone else slightly worried about seeing rumours like this

If Sabean is up to his old tricks of trading for past it vets with bad contracts then he has to go at the end of the season regardless of whether we get in the playoffs.

Alright, I'll bite. Let us in on your secret. Downs?
no relation to kelly
Matt Downs, then? Does this mean someone's getting DFAed?

You are probably right about aurilia.I would rather have rich but ELM is right there is a 40 man issue.
That part I dont have . But the rest is right on he left fresno this am.
Very interesting tidbit. Thanks.
