I got home late yesterday to find the Giants had just played their best game of the year. It’s only one of 162, but the ten-zip win over St. Louis was a microcosm of all the things we want from the Giants, starting with complete domination from a starting pitcher, one of Tim Lincecum’s best games as a pro, and ending with a post-game radio wrap that featured at least a half-dozen “Big Sadowski” jokes.
Timmah struck out eight, a paltry sum for him, but he knew the Cards were swinging early in the count (a strategy teams are using lately with more frequency but not with more success). So he threw the ball where they could only hit it weakly, except for Albert Pujols, who lined into an out and doubled off the left-field wall. Hence a complete game shutout with fewer than 100 pitches.
The game also featured a key three-run homer from Travis Ishikawa in a spot that screamed for a power hitter to take control of the situation. Mediocre fastball down the middle — Ishikawa planted it in the bleachers. Nate Schierholtz continued to hit the ball hard with two hits and coulda shoulda had at least another. Great pitching, nice defense, and young guys hitting the ball hard. Sounds like a plan.
Sunday, I missed the debut of Ryan Sadowski, who threw so well he’ll get another chance Friday. Good on ya, mate. No one saw his promotion coming. Here is the only mention of him I can find from my archives:
5/29/09: Who will fill the rotation if Sanchez goes away between now and July? Sadowski is in AAA for the first time as a 26–year-old [and] unlikely…
He was so unlikely, I didn’t even bother to relay his minor league record, which goes to show you how baseball moves often fall out of the sky.
Take for example all the trade rumors regarding the Giants’ pursuit of a hitter: for all the talk of Jermaine Dye, Nick Johnson, Matt Holliday, and other usual suspects, there’s one name that came up today that no one had previously floated: Victor Martinez. For those who don’t know him, he splits time for the Indians between first base (36 starts in 2009) and catcher (38 starts), he’s a switch hitter, and except for an injury-plagued 2008 has been good for 20 home runs, a good eye at the plate, and 35–40 doubles a year — about five wins better than replacement. That’s real good. (In Jorge Posada’s peak six-year period with the Yanks, he averaged 5.3 WAR.)
Martinez’s power won’t necessarily be blunted by Mays Field, and he gives the Giants more leeway to trade Bengie Molina or let him walk this winter if they don’t want to rush Buster Posey. In hindsight he’s an obvious target for the Giants. But I don’t think he’s come up once until now.
Who knows whether the Indians would trade such a valuable player who’s under contract through 2010 ($7 M club option next year) for a package of players that doesn’t include one of the Giants’ big four prospects. I’d say it’s unlikely. I think discussions would have to start with Tim Alderson and build from there.
SMALL PRINT UPDATE: Sadowski on the roster, Aurilia on bereavement leave, Kelvin Pichardo on the 60–day DL. Interesting decision upcoming when Aurilia returns Friday. Bochy has already said Sadowski gets another start Friday, which means…Richie DFA? Sanchez to the minors?
I enjoyed watching Sadowski on Sunday, he reminded me of a journeyman solid 5th man in the rotation. Most young kids you project their ceiling and subsequently their basement and typically the range can be pretty broad between how successful or how unsuccessful they will be. Sadowski to me has a ceiling of about a 5th starter and a basement of about a 5th starter.
I see this as a positive simply because I think at worst this kid could win 10-14 games a year and never lose more then 8-10. Is there room in this rotation past this year for the kid... unfortunately no unless Sabean can sack up and trade Alderson for Victor Martinez which I would be totally all right with.
The bottom line is that we can afford to trade someone like Alderson if we can get a ligit bat for him. Martinez more then qualifies as a ligit bat and as far as projections go, Alderson could be the next Matt Cain or he could be the next Kurt Ainsworth. Few pitchers are can't miss prospects and I think Bumgarner is definitely a can't miss but Alderson on the other hand I am not so sure about. His numbers are still good in AA but he is giving up more hits per innings and getting less K's.
A couple more points: Lewis should be permanently benched in favor of Schierholtz (imagine how good Schierholtz would be if he had actually gotten a chance to play over the last 2 years). Edgar Renteria is garbage and anyone that wants to praise Sabean for the way the team has played this season should think about giving credit to the players and Bochy way before Sabean who hasn't really done anything all that great. Any position on this team could use an upgrade but only if it will be a significant contributer unlike Laroche, Konerko, Lee, or any other over the hill has been. If Sanchez keeps pitching well out of the pen could trading Affeldt become a possibility??
Get a clue! You dont know anything after one start! That is for openers.Secondly, Affeldt is a big part of this teams success and Sabean deserves the credit along with the scouting dept and you do not want to trade him..Third,Renteria is doing just fine and he is not hurting the club.He could be a problem next year but right now he is doing his job. Stay on the sideline until you have something to say that makes sense.
Excuse me, but what part of Renteria's stats(BA/OBP/OPS .257/.314/.643) are doing just fine. Those are execrable numbers from someone you are paying $18M over the next 2 years. Perhaps it is his really shitty defense you are so enamored with, perhaps?
Oh, I know.......it's the clubhouse presence. Yeah, that's the ticket.
I agree (without the sarcasm) that Renteria has been disappointing. The one bright spot is that he's nails with runners in scoring position: .328 / .403 / .443 in 72 PAs. Let's hope he has a second half revival like he did last year in Detroit.
No, it was a bad signing from the start. I just think he is not doing as bad as I or everyone else thought he would . I agree about the 18 million is an over do but that is obvious. The thing is he hasnt hurt the team that bad it could be way worse. Its not the nine million this year that hurts. Its the nine million next year that is going to hurt.
Who are you guys pulling for in the Dodgers/Rockies series? Seems silly to ask and now that I type it I realize I must ALWAYS choose whoever the Dodger's are playing.
Good question, good answer. Tough to say.
At this point, even though it's the Rockies we are most probably battling, we should root for the Dodgers to lose. It's still too early, as a number of reporters have been reporting lately, and one good losing streak on their end - for which they are due - and one good winning streak on our end - we haven't put together a really good one yet - and we could be very close to them for the division lead.
Though I don't care for Baker anymore, I still use the Baker rule: just gain one game per week in the standings, and if you can do that before the end of the season, you are still close enough to win the division.
Lefty,
When Richie comes back I expect Downs to be sent down now that Urbie is starting at 2B. For a while the Giants will go with just 4 bench bats and the excess of 8 bullpen arms.
Downs started two of the three games in Milwaukee, Uribe started last night and again tonight. Did Bochy say Uribe is now the starter?
I was going to comment that Downs would be the obvious guy to go down when Aurilia comes back, so I agree with rainman.
There has been no announcement, plus Bochy on the radio show today said that Downs would get a start to give the old guys a rest, which I took to mean Uribe.
I still think Frandsen will be up after the All-Star game, meanwhile, they will get by with who they got up here now.
I don't think Sanchez will be sent down. He's a headcase and has a fragile ego, and getting sent down would make him useless to us for the rest of the season. I think Sadowski lasts to All-Star game, but would have to keep on pitching well, like he did in his first start, to keep the job after the break. When he falters, Sanchez gets put back in.
With Torres, Lewis, Downs (then Aurilia), Whiteside on the bench, it is not great, but doable against the poorer competition we will be facing on the homestand. There is no one obvious on the pitching staff to send down other than Sanchez and Sadowski. They could also DFA Howry, but I don't see that happening.
Actually, the obvious guy to go away would be Aurilia. Unfortunately, the Giants front office doesn't see it.
Hey davey jr., eat a tube steak sandwich smothered in underwear. You must be related to sabean to be that supportive and the fact that you think Renteria is actually doing a good job throws any credibility you may have had right out the window. Stick to pumpin gas during the day and beatin your kids and 300 pound wife at night. Retarded fans like you are the reason this team has sucked for 4 years and sabean still has a job.
You are a joke! trade Affeldt??? and try to evaluate a guy on one srart???
Oh I know who this is. Its Pat O from the Castro with the tube steak comment. Its ok castro you will be ok.
You know a guy named Pat O from the castro? Hang out there a lot do you? Say hi to your whale I mean wife and go easy on the kids next time you are too drunk to see straight and need to feel big.
No, the whole city knows its you now.Why dont you come down to sec 121 row bbb seat 1 friday and I will introduce you to Edgar and you can tell him what a pile of crap he is.We will see what a pussy you are without your computer. You need to be there at 5:15 Pm Just remember he is better at what he does than ANYTHING! you will ever do in your life.
Lefty said that it would start with Alderson.
I think V-Mart would require Posey or Bumgarner in the deal, ultimately. The Indians are not in a position of dumping guys just to get salary off their roster, they will only make a deal that gets them ready to battle in 2010, after all, they got Grady Sizemore still on the team. I don't think a package led by Alderson would do it for the Indians.
Look at last year's trade. About half a year of Sabathia (V-Mart has additional year), and the Brewers sent their #1 prospect, Matt LaPorta, plus #11 Bryson and #24 Brantley and Zach Jackson, who was #16 the year before. For comparison, the Giants equivalent would be #1 Bumgarner, #11 Waldis Joaquin (or they might want #13 Henry Sosa), #24 Matt Downs (or they might want #23 Thomas Neal), and last years #16 Nick Pereira (or this year's #15 Kevin Pucetas or #17 Travis Ishikawa).
Given their #1 prospect is a C, and looking over this list, plus fact that V-Mart is signed for another year, I think Bumgarner, Ishikawa (to replace V-Mart at 1B, platoon with Garko, perfect), Pucetas, and probably someone like Scott Barnes, would be what they are looking for in a package from us for V-Mart, based on what they got for Sabathia.
I know V-Mart is no Sabathia, but it's 1.5 years of low cost V-Mart vs. 0.5 years of CC, he plays both C and 1B, switch-hitter, might be able to sign him long term (Nero is agent, not Boras, not sure what that means), excellent hitter, hit same at home as on the road, power, he's in his prime, 30 this year.

Z-Ku's will heal you
Welcome home Lefty, you were missed. It was an interesting time for you to be gone.
Martinez would be a great addition for the Giants but I really don't see this happening (at least not this year) for a few reasons. Firstly while the Indians have sucked this year there have been no signs they are willing to sell. Add in the fact that their two most tradeable assets, Martinez and Cliff Lee, are both under contract for next year at a good price and already you have a pretty strong argument for not trading. Of course if a trade were to take place you have to account for the fact that the Indians have a lot of outfielders so we probably wouldn't be able to trade Randy Winn/Fred Lewis, they probably wouldn't want Bengie either, and they would probably be asking for Bumgarner as the centrepiece of any deal.
While I see this as a great potential deal for the Giants I think we may have to put it on the back burner untill after the season/in a years time (unless off course we can pull off the deal without giving up top prpospects)
and what about them moving DeRosa if they were not interested in moving players??? Lefty, if we add Victor Martinez, we not just win the Wild Card, I think the Pennant would be a real possibility. I would put Alderson at the top of the offer (Bumgardner, Villalona, Posey and Sandoval are all untouchables), I would try and keep Ishikawa for his defense and in case Victor can play more catcher than first next year. So Alserson, Valdez to me is a potential closer that would be appealing to many teams (I would not dare trade Romo), Guzman seems to be a potential DH star in the AL, and either Sosa or Pucetas would be reasonable.
So Indians get: Alderson, Valdez, Sosa or Pucetas and Guzman.
Giants get: Victor Martinez...
Seems a very balanced trade. If they want to add a Downs or Frandsen, just fine by me...Martinez will be the biggest potential impact bat I think in this trade market. He trumps Uggla, Cantu, Dye, Lee, etc.
So is that the section where the Edgar jock sniffing fan club sits? I could care less about meeting edgar but i would love to meet you and your huge wife. If you are looking to pick a fight then you should try doing it with someone offline. I haven't met a D-bag yet on the internet that didn't think he was a complete bad ass. You just told me where your season tickets are so you should be ready for when I stop by and to say hi. I hope you have a good dental plan.
