There are still four hours to trade freely, so this is an open-ended exercise: weigh in on the best and worst trades so far. (And a reminder that I'm now on Twitter. When I can't update this blog, I'll try to tweet thoughts on trades as they happen.)
My two picks for best trade so far:
- Cards get Matt Holliday for Brett Wallace, a big-time hitting prospect who is blocked by Albert Pujols, and two others. Great trade for both teams.
- Phils get Cliff Lee and Ben Francisco for four prospects, none of whom were on the Indians' original wish list, according to Ken Rosenthal.
Sorry, despite Scott Ostler's vigorous defense of Brian Sabean this morning, neither of the Giants' trades make the best-of list. Worst-of? I won't go that far, in part thanks to the Kansas City Royals. To recap my take: I don't mind that the Giants traded two well-regarded pitchers, I just wish they got back something more substantial, especially for Alderson.
SMALL PRINT UPDATE: Billy Sadler is the sad one today, cut from the 40-man roster to make room for Freddie Sanchez. No decision on who leaves the 25-man until Sanchez is activated, probably tomorrow or Sunday.
