That's
the report. I'm not disappointed the Giants have traded Alderson, but for a guy who won't hit with any power? Why? Why why why why why? Was it not possible to put Alderson and a couple other prospects together for someone who can hit cleanup? If Sanchez hits
.330 / .380 / .460 down the stretch and the Giants score five runs a game, I'll be happy in a general sense. But I still won't be happy about this trade. Even worse, I'll have to read for the next two months the national punditry revving their LOLSABEAN engines yet again. Sigh.
Disclaimer: Giants Brass reserves the right to trade any prospect under their control for any other prospect at any value, which we may determine from time to time. We also reserve the right to value VETS at a higher rate than Noobies and said rate is variable with an index based upon the incidence of "lunatic fringe" fan blogging plus 14%.
Please enjoy the use of your new hitters and ballpark.

true, true, true. I'm not in love with Timmy2 and am not upset with trading him. I'm not upset with adding Sanchez either but this is ABSURD. I'm sure all Sabes could think of was .300 hitter, .300 hitter, allstar, .300 hitter, I've GOT TO DO IT. Of course I'll cheer for Freddie and hope he does well but I thought the Pirates were "dumping salary." Who knows if Tim will ever pan out, and only time will tell, but on the surface I think this was really dumb. Surely we could have started with Tim and ?? and ?? for V-MART.
>>.300 hitter, .300 hitter, allstar, .300 hitter,
Don't forget BATTING TITLE!
I want to shake Brian Sabean's hand and say, "Does '.336 career on-base percentage' mean anything to you?"
Oh yeah, I'm sure Sabes was thinking, "The Phillies GAVE UP 4 of their top TEN prospects for Lee and I only have to give up one for a former batting title champ."
Like you, I don't have a problem with the Giants trading Alderson, just not for Freddy Sanchez. I would be okay with a deal that sent Alderson to the Nationals for Willingham. At least then we would have an actual cleanup hitter.
oy vey..I wanted Freddie Sanchez for weeks, but not at this price. I am convinced with the market for Garko and other hitters that Sanchez could have been had for Merkin Valdez at the very most, maybe Sosa. Makes little sense to me. I thought Alderson was equal value to a prospect liek Drabek and could have been part of a blockbuster deal for either Halladay or V-Mart. Zach Duke shoudl have been part of the package coming to us, even with adding Pucetas. Pucetas and Alderson for Duke and Sanchez would have at least been tolerable....
Two birds in the hand are worth a lot more than two in the bush.
Sabean just got two pretty good, established, Major Leaguers for two kids who might, some day, if all goes well, appear, even if briefly, in the bigs. Huge advantage Sabean.
KNBR is gushing about this trade. Me, I'm not so excited about a guy who can give us 1 single per week more in the season's last 9 weeks. The G's are one of the NL's worst in both drawing walks and hitting bombs. Sanchez does neither. No help there.
As for losing Alderson, not too big a loss, but even as exciting as this season is so far, I have more hope for future seasons because of the team's improved Minor League talent pool.
Basic Math:
Garko > Barnes = Good Value
((Timmy2 + X years under control) * potential) > (Sanchez + X years for big $$$) = NOT So Good Value
Welcome to Sabeanmetrics = be happy!
I think that Lincecum and Cain are happy that moves are improving the offense. A happy Lincecum and Cain today are more important than a potential Alderson.
In another question - is Alderson projected to be better than Jonathan Sanchez? Just curious...

projections?
doen't make sense to me....this week we gave up 2 top pitching prospects....for a couple of guys that may not be here in a couple of years...could have been nice to have Barnes, Alderson, Bum, and others in the rotation ...but I guess there is no such thing as patience...there goes building from within
I agree with the article about uncertainty and predicting. But the question remains - who would be considered a better long- term 'prospect' - J Sanchez or T Alderson?
In a related question - is the consensus that F Sanchez is a good player? Or is he somehow damaged goods?
The Pirates gave up LaRoche for peanuts, and Sanchez is HURT right now. It's unbelievable that Sabean had to give up a consensus top 50 prospect for him. It feels like he blinked on this one. I honestly feel like he could've had Sanchez for some combination of Guzman, Frandsen, Bowker or Valdez.
The thinking behind the trade seems to be this: Given our pitching the Giants don't need a huge offensive upgrade to win. We're winning now without a clean-up hitter.
Note that Sanchez will be batting second and his value (from Sabes point of view) is not OBP but to hit to opposite filed--i.e., to move runners from first to third and second to home. It seems clear to me that Sabes believes the market currently over-values power (measured by slg) and undervalues such things as defense and moving runners over, which are much more difficult to measure statistically.
Please note that this entire team is built around a much different paradigm than most teams for the last 15 years--in short, they're trying to exploit the market by returning to styles of play not highly regarded in this era of baseball. That's the key to understanding the way the entire team is built and the moves they've made in the last year to two years. Only time will tell, of course, whether this is genius or a fool's errand.
Barton, you have managed to put a positive spin on an otherwise rediculous trade. The thinking behind the trade breaks down to having a GM who isn't creative enough to turn a top prospect (according to Sabean and Giants Brass, also regarded as "untouchable") into something more then a light hitting and avg. speed second baseman. Dan Uggla or Brian Roberts were probably both available if Sabean was willing to deal Alderson and maybe one or two other prospects and both would have filled bigger holes (leadoff or middle of the order).
We could have also had Orlando Hudson at the beginning of the year for 4 million as opposed to the 8 million Freddy will make next year or we could have traded Alderson for DeRosa who St. Louis gave up very little to get and either one of those players would have been better then Sanchez.
I don't mind trading Alderson as I thought he would be able to net us a quality bat but this was not what I had in mind. Ever since Bonds left this team has had one big huge gigantic glaring weakness that somehow continues to get overlooked by management. Everyone but the giants seem to know that this team needs a ligit middle of the order bat and nothing has been done to address it. Furthermore, by committing 8 million to Freddy next year that all but solidifies that they won't have enough money in free agency this offseason to entice a big bat to come here.
This move is more of the same in my mind of what we have come to expect from Sabean. Overpaying for mediocre at best talent that doesn't make a difference on a team already filled with light hitting overpaid slow offensive players. We are already paying around 19 million to Winn and Renteria who have combined for 4 homeruns on the season and streaky at best contributions.
