When the Giants Come to Town, It's Bye-Bye Baby

Queridos fanaticos de los Gigantes, I give you your new fifth starter. Don't blame him for once being a Dodger -- unless he sucks as a Giant.

Now we know why the Giants had that Welcome Back, Kent party Saturday. They had to soften us up for the big news. Geez, what's next? Ron Cey as GM? Steve Garvey to coach the Giants' wives softball team?

The strategy has worked. Even this guy likes the Penny move. I do, too, for the record. If he bombs out, the Giants pay about $100,000 and move on. If he's decent, he's probably the best fifth starter in the league. If they make the playoffs, he could be a valuable bullpen arm, along with Randy Johnson.

If you're scratching your head and saying Why would the Giants sign some ex-Dodger schmuck with a famously bad attitude who couldn't keep his job in Boston? read this.

I agree that he can't be worse than the other options (accepting that MadBum is not an option). I didn't see him with the Sox, but his main issue with LA was that he was a red*ss who tended to lose his composure over an error or a missed strike call. When he keeps his cool, he can be very effective with the high fastball (a la Schilling) and a big ol' 12-6 hook. Maybe he should chill with the Zeetster?

Bravo, Sabean. Good move 'cause it can't hurt.

Yea, you really knocked this one outa the park Sabes!! This isn't a bad move at all actually and if Penny gets a few wins and helps get us to the playoffs then great. My personnal feeling is that the AL East is the hardest division to pitch in and even Timmy would probably have a few bad games if he had to face the lineups out there every fifth day.

September hopes eternal!

Amen! And a Penny for the collection box.

The Cardinals have done well taking on Boston leftovers (Lugo, Smoltz) so hopefully Penny will do the same for you!

The Giants should keep the Big Unit in the dugout just to give Penny the stankeye if he acts up.

Is Penny still boaning Alyssa milano?

I thought that was Berry Zito? We could have a fun love triangle brewing!

Can't ever discount the fact that he is a redass and is still pissed at the Dodgers. Penny is wound tight enough that he'll pitch the game of his life the next time he gets a shot at them. Remember, even if there isn't a pennant race on the line, it's still always fun to punch Lasorda in the gut from time to time. It's a win-win....

Penny for your thoughts: Now that Timmy has been pushed back to Thursday, does Brad start Wed. night instead?

Dave Jr., Penny moved on from Alyssa Milano to Eliza Dushku, but that was a couple years ago and didn't last. Still, life just isn't fair sometimes.

Can I please hit the town with Penny and Zito? I would gladly take the leftovers.

Ouch! Sorry, Dear, just kidding - guys I gotta go.

I like this move, but it's pretty hard to not like low-risk high reward type moves. I kind of think it's a no-brainer.

What I don't like is the Dodgers getting Thome, one of my favorite players in the league. I realize the Giants went out and got Garko at the deadline, but it seems like they could have tried for Thome.

Thome cannot play anywhere on the field...he is strictly a pinch hitter in the NL. Garko is younger and can play in the field....albeit poorly.

No one knew Thome would be available. Plus he can only be a D liability. We couldn't put him in the game. Not a good option. He's fine as a PH coming off the bench but not much more.

I don't know. How bad is his fielding, especially compared to Garko. (I really don't know). I'm more upset he went to the Dodgers.. I used to like him.

how bad is Thome's fielding? Just ask him:

"We're not bringing him over here to play first base," Colletti said. "We're bringing him here to come off the bench and be a great influence in the clubhouse. He's one of the true great guys in the game.

"In fact, the night before the deadline he called me. ... He just said: 'I just want to be honest with you. I'd love to come. I want to help you guys any way I can. But playing first base is not something I'm going to be able to do -- maybe in an emergency situation, perhaps.'"

Well I guess that's a big reason not to bring him in.

I think the question is: Would you rather have Penny OR Garland?

But how many home runs will he hit?
