When the Giants Come to Town, It's Bye-Bye Baby

8/17: Zack in the Sack

Giants 10, Mets 1: The Giants signed top draft pick Zack Wheeler, a right-handed high school pitcher from Georgia, but he reportedly won't pitch in the minors this season. Where might he debut next year? Remember that Tim Alderson, currently an Altoona Curve (or just a point on the Curve?), had a few innings in rookie league after he signed, but effectively he made his pro debut the next year at High-A.

A quick recap of tonight's game if you missed it: the Giants had Livan Hernandez's number from the get-go, though it took a while to break through. It looked like they were looking low in the strike zone and hitting his sinker hard. Both Rowand and Schierholtz seemed to reach down to hit screamers, Rowand's for a home run, Schierholtz's for the key double in the 6th that more or less cemented the win. On the radio, Duane Kuiper noted that Schierholtz appeared to have moved up in the batter's box.

The Giants face three righties in Cincy, and I'm very curious to see if Bochy starts Garko all three games. Or Schierholtz, for that matter. I was steamed Nate wasn't in the lineup tonight, and now I'm scared his huge pinch-hit double, added to his already stellar pinch-hit record this year, will make Boch think he's more valuable coming off the bench.

great historic event at the so-called Great American BP: Pete Rose phoned in a four-game parley from the clubhouse that actually hit, paying 12-to-1?

Great historic event at GABP: Marge Schott abolished slavery in 1989?

Two events there, either the place where Ray Fosse got hit so hard he ended up spending the rest of his life rooting for the A's or where Hollywood cowboy Roy Rogers (Trigger's BFF) was born.

Dodgers 14-17 since the allstar break.

Thanks, I figured that it was something bad but not that bad.

All the performance outliers finally caught up with them as they regressed to the mean. I didn't see how they could be that much better than last year because they lost Lowe and while they have good young players, it is not like they are superstars either, and they have basically the same team as last year, minus Lowe (but replaced by Manny I suppose) and plus Hudson, and that team was a .500 team.

If they fall any further, it could become a very interesting dog fight between the three teams for both the division title and wild card.

But, being realistic, that's still 5 games to make up in the standing, it requires both you being good and them being bad (or you being extraordinarily good).

Hank Aaron's first home run?
Ken Griffey Jr. conceived in equipment room?

Johnny Fever is the only recorded person in history to actually do better on the sobriety test with the more he drank?

Herb Tarlick beat up a dungaree wearing hippie for his lunch money while Les Nessman looked on?

"the turkeys are hitting the ground like bags of wet cement." "Who knew turkeys couldn't fly?"

Nate has to play every day...the more Blockhead resists, the more harm to our offense. He is just coming into his own and moving up on the plate against a soft-throwing Livan is a veteran type of move. Keep it up Nate...what are we going to do when Torres is ready to come off the DL? I would not mind seeing a Torres-Velez-Schierholtz OF on some days....

Schierholtz starting: .273/.308/.422/.730

Hey, I've been calling for the Giants to trade Winn the past two seasons, but I'm pragmatic that Nate hasn't really done it this season except as PH. When he did start, he was hot, then got very cold. As long as he gets to start in RF in 2010, I'm OK with sporadic usage as long as Winn is hitting OK. It is what it is.

Why would you throw out Schierholtz's pinch-hitting stats in assessing him?

Because those are situations that is not what he normally faces on a regular basis.

One is that it does give some advantages to the hitter that he does not always see when he is batting regularly. Such as, with runners on base (typically), the pitcher has to be more careful of walking you and making the situation worse. That could mean more fastballs, less off-speed corner stuff that pitchers seem to get him and other young Giants with regularly. Or there could be a speedster on 1B distracting the pitcher.

Of course, there are disadvantages too. Loogy brought in. Top relievers. Perhaps the strategy is to pitch away and not be afraid of walking him.

It is also small sampling hell on an overall basis. He's been very lucky to a great extent, with a BABIP of .447, which overstates his abilities, obviously.

So we don't get a really good picture of his abilities looking at a hitters PH appearances, there are all these factors that could make the numbers way off of what his real abilities lay.

Ideally, we can take some function, apply it to the PH stats (like MLE or xFIP) and get a better idea of what that really represents, but it's not a big enough problem to get anyone to think about it.

FYI, I should note that his stats above only includes starts, but those numbers plus PH does not equal his AB's, as he sometimes moves into RF afterward. When playing RF, he has hit only .273/.305/.420/.725. As PH, he has hit .433/.438/.533/.971 in 32 PA.

Dang, had a nice big answer, but IE died...

I think MadBum better comparison with Wheeler. MadBum assigned to Augusta because of closeness to home, plus he was 18 and Alderson was 19, so perhaps that factored into Giants decision (not sure how old Wheeler is).

Thanks for info on Schierholtz's adjustment. Kuip noted on morning show that Garko frustrated, focused on hitting gaps (HR will then follow).

Garko probably starting at least 2 if not all 3. Been that way since trade. Giants are going to give him chance to ignite, he did do well on last trip if I recall right, plus Cincy good place to do that.

Schierholtz, he had starting but lost job by going totally cold, so I'm more pragmatic about him now. His overall stats boosted by great PHing, so his stats starting is probably not that impressive right now.

Plus, Rowand appears to be finally healthy (radio noted his strong throw could happen because yesterday was first day his arm felt healthy enough) and he seems to hit great when healthy. That is why I posted on MCC about trainers, why not DL Rowand the moment he's banged up and cold hitting, get him healthy and ready to hit well for us.

Winn appears to be warming up too. He could carry a team when hot.

Garko might eventually get playing time in LF if others get cold. At trade, Giants commit to both Garko and Ishikawa, but the only way that works is if platoon at 1B and Garko plays LF otherwise. Then Velez becomes hot and screws up that plan.

Hey there,

I hope you can find space for this on your blog…

United Way just announced a great deal on tickets for local sports teams. For $75 you can get a package of tickets to the Giants, 49ers and SJ Quakes, or a package with tix for the A's, Warriors and Raiders.

Plus, you can avoid hefty TicketMaster fees by purchasing from the United Way site. All told, you save over 50% of what you'd pay for face value + transaction fees.

A portion of ticket sales will benefit United Way, which is helping families hit hardest by the economic crisis.

I just don't think it matters. Even a full season's 600 at-bats is a small sample, as shown by how much a player's stats shift from one season to the next. Why subdivide into smaller and smaller chunks? You're guaranteeing yourself a distorted view of a player's abilities.

Anyway, as a general rule, players do quite a bit worse when pinch hitting.

Why do my replies never attach to the comments I'm replying to? The little dialogue box says it's in the right place.

Anyway, I was responding to OGC's comment about Schierholtz & pinch hitting.

Jesus, (Guzman, not) this is making my head spin.

Can't we just have 8 guys hitting regular like for more than one game in a row.

Can't we just have veterans than play/hit like real veteran, can-o-corn, chaw-in-the-mouth, 3-day beard, grab-your-crotch-n-spit guys.

Can't we just have a team that doesn't take a college degree in statistics to arrive at the correct batting order every day. (and, no I don't care what Garko is hitting against right-handed middle relievers in night games versus Schierholtz pinch hitting against lefties in day games*) *SSS will be the death of us all.

Can't we just have hitters that actually, you know, listen to their major league hitting instructors (all two of them).

Can't we just have one position player other than a panda who can hit/field/steal/move a runner over/walk even once a game.

Can't we just win like 10 in a row - AND BE DONE WITH THIS!

Chato es muy loco
