8/24: Well, That Wasn't So Bad, Was It?

Vote 0 Votes

Rockies 6, Giants 4 (14): Fuck off. It was. Probably the worst thing I've seen since the 2002 World Series. Do I need to recap it for those who weren't watching or listening? Please don't make me.

OK, briefly: After 13 innings of nail-biting, head-pounding, exasperating 1-1 ball, the Giants score three in the 14th. Huzzah! Sighs of relief! Then Brandon Medders, who'd done a fantastic job for two innings, walks Dexter Fowler to lead off the 14th, but not before Fowler slams a foul ball into his own kneecap. Basically Fowler couldn't walk, or presumably swing very well, but Medders couldn't throw him a 3-2 strike. Medders gets the next guy, then Bochy gives him the hook. OK, fine. He seemed gassed.

Justin Miller enters and melts down: Hit to Iannetta, walk to Tulowitzki, walk to pitcher Adam Eaton (no pinch-hitters left) to force in a run. It's 4-2. Out goes Miller, in comes Merkin Valdez. Up comes Ryan Spilborghs, out goes the 0-1 pitch over the center field fence. Grand slam, game over.

You can read that a few more times, or you can lick a razor blade. Or, like me, you can finish your whiskey, tell your wife you still love her despite everything, promise it's not her fault even though she thinks baseball fanaticism is a funny concept, turn out the light and try to get some sleep.

This is not a night for solemn pronouncements, rage or blame; nor is it the time for a pep rally. Stew over it if you like, but if you come to any massive illuminating conclusions because of tonight's horror show, don't trust them. Just nod your head and move on.

One move I'll practically guarantee the Giants make before tomorrow's game, however: Freddie Sanchez, who couldn't even pinch-hit tonight, will go on the DL, and the Giants will bring up a pitcher. There are some tired arms and shell-shocked minds in the Giant bullpen right now.
