Giants 2, Rockies 0: If I weren't so relieved about the win I'd whack myself in the head with a hammer. More like a ping than a whack, actually, just enough to remind myself that when you're a Giants fan, pleasure is only an eyelash away from pain.
Hooray for Tim Lincecum, who under the circumstances pitched his best game of the year. And hooray for Brian Wilson for a relatively uneventful ninth inning. It should not have been this close. In the first four innings, the Giants had five different runners in scoring position, often with less than two out. None of them scored. In the 8th Juan Uribe had a leadoff triple and never scored.
Am I too sour? Do I need to lighten up? Perhaps listening to the ebullient Dave Flemming on the late-night call-in will cheer me up.
SMALL PRINT UPDATE: Extra arms are golden between now and Sept. 1, so Joe Martinez is out and lefty reliever Alex Hinshaw is in. Martinez didn't fare well in his audition as fifth starter, so what to do when one is needed -- Saturday Sept. 5 in Milwaukee, by my count. Martinez again? Ryan Sadowski? I don't think Randy Johnson will be ready to roll by then. Perhaps with all the call-ups the Giants can play "bullpen start," with a few guys getting an inning or two? Thoughts?
