When the Giants Come to Town, It's Bye-Bye Baby

09.08.2009
Here Comes MadBum

Remember this, from Andy Baggarly's blog on Aug. 31?

Also, no word yet on September callups, but I'm told there's nothing unexpected -- ie, no Posey, Bumgarner.

Ha. Maybe we were wrong to trust Baggs, but it sounds like the Giants either a) fed him a line of crap knowing he'd report it or b) really thought on Aug. 31 they wouldn't call up Posey or Bumgarner, and honestly changed their minds. Because Posey's on the team -- yes, we have confirmation -- and Bumgarner is on his way, perhaps in a big way.

There are lots of unanswered questions: Why would the Giants start their service clocks with little intention of putting them on the field? Why lose the 40-man roster spots now? But for me, the situation fuels one of my biggest complaints about the Giants front office: when it comes to making personnel decisions, they are slippery people. One day it's one thing, the next it's the opposite, and they end up looking at best wishy-washy, at worst like liars. Why don't they just STFU until the actual decision's been made?

There is a definite "credibility gap" when it comes to the Giants management.

I love MadBum. But... uhm.. why is he here?

I mean the one thing this team has is a stellar starting 5. You want MadBum in the bullpen? Well, on second thought, maybe that's not so bad, but still, it makes little sense to me to start his clock a year early. Our pitching is doing pretty darned good, or hadn't they noticed.

Posey now, him I understand.

Just heard that MadBum is starting tonight. Es verdad?

Yes its true. Lincecum has back inflammation and needs to miss one start. Bumgarner going tonight

What is so wishy-washy about either call-up?

They needed another catcher because Molina was out for 8 games, Sandoval's leg barely allow him to play 3B, let alone catch, and do you really want Garko to catche after not playing the position for 3-4 years, forcing the Giants to do something just in case Molina is out for more.

They need another starting because Lincecum's back went out and Martinez's 10 days are not up if I recall right, and there are no other starters to go to, at least none worth bringing up knowing you could lose someone valuable. It as not like they were planning this, his back was just not happy.

They were not planning on either one coming up. Circumstances changed and so they were forced to bring them up. Seems pretty simple to me.

And Bumgarner's clock can start and stop depending on whether he is in the majors or not, this does nothing to ruin our control of Bumgarner as a Giant.

Wishy washy.... eh. Well I think a lot of front offices do that type of thing. Whether we realize it or not, the Giants have a ton of fan exposure and chatter going on constantly. There are few teams with fanbases as up to date and passionate as ours.

For instance, I'd say half our fanbase can name 4 or 5 top prospects in the farm system at any time. Could half of Indians fans, Braves fans, Oriole fans say the same thing?

Everything we read on this blog, my blog, McCovey Chronicles, The Merc/Chronicle, plus KNBR and CSN... all of this stuff is really hit hard.

I think Sabean and Co. are in a no-win with this situation because they're constantly peppered with questions about Posey/Bumgarner. I'll take wishy washy over "no comment".

Rock on Lefty.

And Posey can't get into the game in the 7th inning when leading 9-2? If he's up and the clock is running give 'em an inning or two. If not then, when?

I'm guessing Lincecum's "injury" is BS so he can start against the Dodgers this weekend, and the Giants didn't trust Martinez or another AAA guy to get even Padre batters out, so they gave the start to Bumgarner, who is basically major league ready after chewing up the minors.

Bummed or Un-Bummed? He comes up from AA and freakin starts tonight and kicks off his arb clock - Wow.

Posing or Posey? He comes up and can't make it in game with a freakin 9-2 lead and Whiteside comes in - Wow.

Hell the front office is probably using a Ouija board.

Hmmm, so we are supposed to believe that Bumgarner who is a starter, pitched an inning in relief on Sunday but that had nothing to do with his callup to pitch today? His last start was on September 1st I believe so he should have started sunday instead of pitching in relief if it was truly not a planned callup.

Also, along with lying about bringing guys up it seems as though management likes to lie about their pitching prospects velocity. When I saw MadBum throw his first few pitches I got flashbacks from the days of flame throwing Jesse Foppert, Jerome Williams, and Kurt Ainsworth and we all know how they all turned out. Since when does mid nineties in the minors equal high eighties in the majors?

Excellent conspiracy theory! I like the way you think.
