You never ever want to see a player get hit with a ball the way Eugenio Velez did in the fourth inning Saturday night. Fortunately the foul ball off Pat Burrell's bat that found Velez in the dugout wasn't as bad as it first appeared. Initial reports from the hospital say it's a concussion, which is no joke, but nothing more so far. Get better, Geno.
Also down for the count is Jeremy Affeldt, who was diagnosed with an oblique tear, which sounds obscure but has taken out many a ballplayer for weeks and weeks on end. Safe to assume the Giants will be without a lefty reliever through August if they make no moves. (They could have called up Alex Hinshaw from Fresno but opted for righty Joe Martinez, which tells you a little something of their feelings about Hinshaw right now.)
The injuries are coming at the Giants from all angles these days. We just learned that the Royals' David DeJesus, considered high on the Giants' list of trade targets, is out the rest of the year with a busted-up thumb.
You'd think a fan following a team that's won 15 of 19 wouldn't need a breath of fresh air, but I can't wait for Jon Miller's acceptance speech at Sunday's Hall of Fame ceremonies for a few tears of mirth. Jon, you make me happy. After Sunday, I go back to biting my nails to the quick for the rest of the season.
