Giants Pound Cincy With Average Offense

Vote 0 Votes
Outslugging the league's highest scoring team 27-7 the past two nights, the Giants made me wonder about a few stats...

- The team is 7th out of 16 ML teams in runs scored, but their total of 562 is much closer to the top (Reds, 622) than the bottom (Pittsburgh, 423) and well above the league average of 516.

- Their per-game average of 4.42 runs is better than 2009 (4.05), 2008 (3.95), and 2007 (4.22), but lower than 2006 (4.63), a year that featured a lot of Barry Bonds, of course, but some surprising performances from players who now get dismissed in a haze of reverse nostalgia. Check out the seasons from Ray Durham, Rich Aurilia, and Dave Roberts.

- The Giants' 562 runs scored and 483 runs allowed give them an expected W-L record of 73-54, two games better than their actual record of 71-56.

Bottom line: The Giants now have a better than average offense to complement their very good pitching staff. Oh, if only Tim Lincecum were his usual self and Jonathan Sanchez could put together consecutive quality starts now and again....

I'll leave it to you to discuss how much of the current situation stems from luck, how much is astute planning, and how much is due to field-level strategy.
