SF 2, AZ 0 (11): Back to Basics

It's as if the Giants, after scoring a bonanza of runs in July and watching their vaunted rotation trip over its shoelaces in August, have reverted back to their original formula the past few days: 11 herbs and spices, four hits, and barely enough runs. Monday, it was great pitching, a killer bullpen, and one key hit. Sunday, it was great pitching, a killer Brian Wilson, and two key hits. Saturday, it was, uh, four home runs in three innings. OK, that wasn't part of the original formula. But the one hit through six innings made me nostalgic. Ah, early 2009.

They're 4-1 in September but have averaged about 5.5 hits and 2.5 walks a game. It's a slim margin of error. I'll take it even if my stomach lining can't. I'm sad I missed Saturday's epic comeback, but I loved watching parts of Jonathan Sanchez's nearly effortless effort Sunday, the best rhythm I'd seen him pitch with since his no-hitter. Also: MadBum, showing no signs of slowing down, or being 21 years old. The kid doesn't get rattled.

Players of the week: Buster Posey on the hittin' side, but the pitchin' side is a harder call. Tim Lincecum for his battle at home against Ubaldo and the Rox, or Dirty Sanchez for shutting the Dodgers down in LA on national TV? I'll take Sanchez by a hair. I'll also give Brian Wilson a nod for an excellent week marred only by Cody Ross' misplay Monday night. Wilson has now pitched in seven of the last nine games. He also pulled one of the funniest interview pranks I've ever seen (about five minutes in if you're impatient).
