How fitting. The Giants hit four home runs tonight at Petco Park, the first time they've done that in what, seven years of games there, and all of them were bombs. No wall scrapers. But the big daddy of them all was from Burrell, who came about as close as anyone ever has to hitting one out of the park. It was a Jose Canseco-on-steroids kind of home run, able to leap the Western Metal Supply building in a single bound. Not quite, but it hit the "W" in Western.
Matt Cain did the pitcher's equivalent of hitting bombs. He threw high fastballs past the Padres all night until Ludwick's home run in the 9th. Two at-bats stand out: In the 6th Adrian Gonzalez swung and missed at two change-ups then whiffed at a high fastball. The next inning Cain fell behind Chase Headley 3 and 1, then blew two high fastballs right past him. I thought to succeed this weekend the Giants had to win small and clean. Tonight they won big and loud.
